Sex Trade – Thailand

The web.

While volunteering with several non profit organizations in Thailand for three months I learned a lot. What seemed cut and dry unjust situation from afar, quickly became a web of many factors, which seemed to become harder to understand the closer I looked.

While economics, government, law enforcement, world view, religion all play a major roll in sex trafficking in Thailand I saw first hand how it is not impossible to get girls out of the sex trade.

Places like the Tamar Center in Pattaya, SHE in Phuket, or Hope Cards in Bangkok are practically meeting the primary need the bar girls need to get out of the bars. Jobs.

Too many women to ignor

There is hope!

Rice farmer, Si Saket

Young women, who are often sent from the farmland up north, are sent into the cities to find jobs to send money to their families. When they get to the cities they find that without speaking english and without job experience the only jobs they can find are in bars serving drinks. They get a free room to serve in bars, but they only get paid to go home with customers, so most of these girls end up trapped in a hard situation.
